Adinkra bowls

These hand thrown ceramic bowls are a tribute to Adinkra cultural symbols of the Gyaman kingdom in modern day C˘te d’Ivoire. The symbols are of the Asante people of present day Ghana who defeated the Gyaman kingdom, and began painting the culture’s symbols onto cloth in the 19th century.

As the tradition goes Nana kofi Adinkra, king of the Gyaman, wore patterned cloth – interpreted as how he expressed hisámisery at being taken to Kamasi, the capital of Asante.
